In the history of mankind, women have always been an interesting model for art, from stone carvings to canvas paintings. They have been the focus of some of the world’s most important masterpieces. While it is essential to acknowledge all the great pieces of artistic expression displaying the female form, some deserve exclusivity for their uniqueness, and some artists merit kudos for their awareness of the importance of women in art.

Leonardo da Vinci

Homage must be paid to the great artist Leonardo da Vinci, who was born during a time when women were far from being on equal ground with men, and yet, he frequently chose women as models and presented them under a favorable light in his art work. To say that he intentionally supported the plight of women would be a stretch, but when one contemplates his art, one can presume that women were a subject of significant interest to him, and that he thought their essence and beauty to be worthwhile capturing with his brush strokes.

Mona Lisa

The list of spectacular and awe-inspiring works of art, using women as the main, subject, includes Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. The haunting portrait is not only a display of striking physical female beauty, but also a show of remarkable understanding, on the artist’s part, of the inner wisdom of women, their subtle charm and seductive nature. For centuries, her mysterious smile has been studied by art critics, only to remain an enigma to this day.

The Last Supper – Mary Magdalen

There is an ongoing debate as to whether the person sitting to the right of Jesus in Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece The Last Supper is indeed Mary Magdalen. The assumption that her role amongst Christ’s disciples merited a place in this famous masterpiece is valid ground to believe that women in art had a major impact in classical art, as well as in the modern art forms today.

The Many Faces of The Madonna

There are countless famous and popular examples of women as subjects in art work. The sheer number of images of the Madonna, sculpted, painted, or otherwise, is impressive. With or without child, she is a symbol of not only spirituality and faith, but also maternal love. Although the Madonna is most often associated with religion, she is also considered a universal ‘mother’ icon. To the non-religious, observer, Madonnas are viewed on a more simplistic level. Beauty, grace, and love artfully expressed through the delicate female form.

What Is Art and What Is It for?

In 1963 I began the reluctant study of Scholastic Philosophy as set out by Thomas Aquinas. The thirteenth century Dominican monk interpreted what Aristotle had to say on the subject of philosophy and how to understand the world and our experience of it. I still remember how Aquinas defined art, “right reason about something to be made.” That made about as little sense to me as the rest of his writings.

Preparing for this column, I reviewed his writing to see if I had been overly harsh in my judgment of him. In the process I ran across the quote with which I started above. Finally I had discovered a bit of Thomistic thinking which made sense to me.

I have been puzzling on a daily basis over the meaning of art since reading a newspaper column a few weeks ago about “bad art.” Do I believe in such a thing? Do I believe in Santa Claus? The Easter Bunny? Does it matter?

I also recalled a recent conversation with an artist at the GO ART! Orleans County Artist Trail. Admiring his work gave me a sense of joy and peace. I asked if he had considered exhibiting at one of the GO ART! Galleries. He looked a little surprised. After a little discussion, the truth came out. Standing amid his paintings in a tent out in the country, he admitted that he wasn’t sure his art was good enough for a gallery.

So what makes art good enough? When first exposed to art materials, children produce wonderful images of how the world looks to them. As they are taught the “rules” of art, their spontaneity often evaporates and they revert to what we think of as childish art. Critics have standards by which they judge the quality of art. Galleries have standards for what they will display. Patrons like some art, are indifferent to some works and dislike others. Yet critics, galleries and patrons don’t agree among themselves or each other on what art is or what makes it good or bad. Many artists, musicians and writers only found recognition long after they died.

I have started asking artists why they do what they do. Jen Scott said she uses her art to express her emotions in a therapeutic way. Doug Domedian uses his photographs to show people what is out there in nature. There are probably as many motivations for producing art as there are artists. I guess it is up to each of us to decide what art is and whether it is “good” or “bad.”

Well the answer lies in the type of personality Andy Warhol was. After graduating as a pictorial design major at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Andy began his career as a commercial graphic artist. However during the 1960′s Andy encountered many failures while trying to exhibit his work. He managed to pick himself up each time and continued to persevere.

It was probably during this time that Andy became interested in the subject of “fame”. He came up with the phrase “fifteen minutes of fame”, where a celebrity who makes intensive efforts to come into the media limelight is easily forgotten when the next celebrity does the same or commits a boo boo. Think of our modern day celebrities like Lady Gaga and Paris Hilton, sadly enough after a while the world forgets.

Though Andy seemed to bear fairly neutral feelings towards celebrities in general, he admired Marilyn Monroe more so than any others in particular because of her beauty mingled with the aura of mystery. She was known to be associated with high profile men of power and till today conspiracy theories abound on how she actually died. He thought of her as a role model not because she was a brilliant actress but also because she was a woman with a vibrant personality, who was not afraid to speak her mind.

Andy did not really do personalized pop art initially. However he started painting his series of Marilyn Monroe pop art canvas portraits after the starlet committed suicide in 1962. He used an original photo of Marilyn taken by Gene Korman from a promotional shoot for the 1953 movie Niagara, in which she played the part of Rose Loomis. Andy mass produced his pop art prints using a method called silk screen printing which he perfected to the latter. Andy Warhol finally completed his series of Marilyn Monroe personalized pop art canvas paintings in 1967.

Though the “Pope of Pop”, as Andy Warhol came to be known, painted many other celebrities and incorporated many everyday objects as subjects in his paintings, his Marilyn Monroe depictions are still probably his most remembered and revered masterpieces.
